Two basic rules in the library:

1. Respect People.
2. Respect Property.

Students in the library during class periods without their teacher must have a pass. 
Students who have an unenrolled GAP period in their class schedule must sign in on the attendance clipboard. 

We expect GAP students to be reading or studying while in the library. 

All students in the library are expected to be reading and/or working.

Library computers are for school work only.

Please talk Q-U-I-E-T-L-Y in the library.

Cell phones must be silenced in the library, and should be put away.  NO STUDENT PHONE USE FOR TALKING IN THE LIBRARY.  Please step outside to talk on your phone.

Food and drink must be sealed and put away out of sight, or left on the library counter. No food or drinks near the computers please.

Occasionally, the library may be closed to outside students - if a class is in the library receiving instruction, if we have two classes using the library at the same time, testing or exams, and meetings.
 

You will need a school owned Chromebook to access several of the school programs and for some online tests and exams.

Chromebook Log-In:

Username: Google ID email address 
Password: Network password

Chromebooks will only be checked in from Seniors before high school graduation, or from students who are moving to a school outside of VUSD.

Damaged, lost or stolen chromebooks will be reported to the VUSD Technology Department - if any fine/obligation will be charged, it will be mailed home to the student’s parent/guardian. There is a financial hardship application available from the school principal or assistant principal.

The library catalog will enable you to look for books in the VHS library.
Look up:

• Title 
• Author 
• Subject (TIP: one or two words will make a more successful subject search).

From the catalog entry:
AUTHOR’S LAST NAME will help you find FICTION books.
CALL NUMBER will help to locate NON FICTION books.
EBOOKS are online books - access through the library catalog to check out using your chromebook, computer or smart phone.

FICTION books are shelved by AUTHOR’S LAST NAME.
There are alphabet letters at the top of the bookshelves to help you find the correct area for the first letter of the author’s last name.

The FICTION books have a spine label with FIC (for Fiction), and usually the first three letters of the author’s last name (like, ROW for J. K. Rowling).
Here’s an example:

Don’t know the author’s name? If you know the title, you can look up the author’s name in the library catalog.

The FICTION section is along the south wall of the VHS library. There are old classics and new books. 

FICTION writing is not true (but may be based on a true story or event).

FICTION books fall into genres of literature:
For example: fantasy, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, horror, mystery, adventure, romance and science fiction. What is your favorite genre of fiction?

So, you have looked through the library books in the FICTION or NON FICTION areas of the library, and found a book!

Remember the old saying, “Never judge a book by its cover.”
Read the first page
Read the summary on the back (or inside the front cover on hardcover books)
Read the author’s statement (if there is one)

Steps to checkout

1. Bring your selected book to the CIRCULATION counter. Students may have up to three library books checked out.
2. Take the check out card out of the pocket inside the front cover.
3. Print your first and last name.
4. DO NOT write today’s date!
5. Give the card and book to the librarian at the circulation counter.
6. YOUR SCHOOL ID CARD will make check out fast and easy - but we can look up your ID number or last name.
7. Your book will be scanned and a DATE DUE card will be placed in the pocket inside the front cover. Your date due is the last date stamped.
8. Library books are loaned for three weeks, and may be renewed a maximum of three times. (Think of others who may want to borrow the book.)
9. Books that are not returned within one month of the date due will be marked LOST, and the student will receive a fine/obligation to pay for a replacement book.

GALE may be your place to gather information!

What is GALE?

GALE is a company that compiles current news, and publications for digital access. There is published media in print, audio and video format. The database is extensive and includes thousands of subjects.

IMPORTANT: You must access our school subscription to GALE through our school website. You cannot Google our school subscription.
 

By following these instructions, you will be able to search, read and download FREE full text and peer reviewed journals, periodicals, research reports, world news, current events, books and encyclopedia entries.

There are three buttons with different ways to search - all have access to GALE databases:

1. GALE in Context - High School
   Broad search, list of popular topics, current events

2. GALE Onefile - Science
   Focus on Science topics, research

3. GALE Powersearch
   For searches by author, title or journal, no list of topics

TEXTBOOKS are books required for class. Everyone in class has the same book.
​Class novels are considered to be textbooks. 
(We may have some of the class novels available as single library books, but the class novels are checked out differently.)
Students should bring their student ID card to check out textbooks and class novels.
New students will need to show their class schedule so that we can be sure to check out the correct textbooks.
Class novels are usually checked out for 4 - 8 weeks. Students return books to the library as soon as they are finished using the book in class.

All textbooks are due in the library by the last day of the class. 
(Books for first semester classes are due when the class ends in January.)

Students with unreturned, lost or damaged textbooks will be charged for a replacement book and be placed on the Obligation List. Returning the book in good condition will clear the obligation.

LIBRARY BOOKS - have a card with the date due stamped. Look at the last (latest) date stamped.
Please return your library book on or before the date due.
TEXTBOOKS are due by the last day of the class. Early returns are welcome!
CLASS NOVELS are due when the class has finished reading the book. Teachers will plan for the class to return books to the library, or tell students to return their novel to the library on their own.
It is the student’s responsibility to return their books to the library when due.
